Don’t Let The Discount Coupon Go To Waste

by Derek Lim on October 10, 2009

While registering for my domain name, I notice that there is a “Coupon Code” text field. I brushed it off since I do not have the code but during my third domain registration in a week, it suddenly hit me that if there is password crack for software and websites, there should be something similar for coupon codes.

I did a search on Google for discount coupon on my domain registrar and whala – the first search result is what I need and it seems that I am not the only one searching for this. On last count, there are nearly 300,000 searches. 300,000 seems like peanuts compared to the millions of websites around.

There are discount codes are all over the web. I’m not talking about physical coupons but coupons used for online transactions. My web host has one but it’s too late for me now. If you are looking for a discount code, do a search in RetailMeNot and you will most likely find something that you need.

Is this legal?

In the event that the discount code is not valid, the best case scenario is to inform you that the discount code has expired but the worst case can be from locking/ banning an already active account or sending you a lawyers letter. Take my case for example, I have a few domain names with MyDomain.com and should they decide to lock my account, it will also affect my other websites. Granted that MyDomain don’t actually own my domain names but getting them back might be a hassle.

Searching the web doesn’t comes up with much answers either. The best answer I got was from Yahoo answers.

I guess common sense prevails. If they are illegal, sites that published discount coupons will most likely have closed down long ago and if the system accepts the discount code, it is most likely legal. However, it can’t help to be doubly sure. Check that the discount coupon work before logging in with your account. Most sites allow you to first place the order and verify the price before actually logging in to make the final transaction.

I’ve not read anything negative about using discount coupons online and I will love to hear your experience.

Oh and in case you are wondering, I saved 15% off my new domain name registration.
